The service in all Italian restaurants or bars is already inclusive in the bill, so you are not obliged to leave tips for any kind of service. But especially in the restaurants or hotels leaving tips is a sign of satisfaction from the client's point of view and a sort of reward in the waiter's regards for his good service. It is not by chance that there exists the common expression "il resto è mancia" (the rest is for tips). From the client side this habit is a way to thank the waiter for the service received, on the other hand is meant to round up the bill making the payment easier. In case you pay with credit card you can leave some cash tips directly to the waiter or put some more money signing the proper space in the receipt while you are paying with the credit card. After all, you are not supposed to leave a fixed percentage on the bill as it happens abroad, so the choice is up to the client: he decides how much concerning his satisfaction. TIP: Leave a massive tip for any English speaking theatre company performing in the streets of Rome! |
