Rome public transport is called Metrebus, a combination of the words: metro, treno metropolitano and autobus. With Metrebus tickets you can travel on these three means of transport:

bulleton different routes
bulletinside a city area
bulletthrough different areas.

Fares depend solely from the areas you cross, not from the number of means of transport.

Tickets must always be stamped:

bulleton getting on buses
bulletbefore getting on metro and trains.

The bus and metro system is not free! Validate your ticket before boarding the metro; for the bus, look for the orange stamping machines overboard. Id you are caught without a validated ticket, the fine is Euro 51,64 (Us $55.56, UK£36)

TIP: Even if it seems like you are the only one stamping your ticket and every one else is travelling for free, we do not suggest trying to fare dodge.  Transport is checked periodically and being a tourist or a nun is not a valid excuse for not having a ticket.  You will receive a fine if caught travelling without a stamped, validated ticket.
