Thefts and losses: Passports

First you must file a report at a "Carabinieri" or "Polizia" station. Both have offices at Termini station.
Otherwise, you can go to one of the following central police stations:

  • Carabinieri - Via Mentana, 6 (North of Termini) or Piazza Venezia (no number but you can't miss them!)
  • Polizia - Via Farini, 40 (south of Termini), or Via S. Vitale, 15 (off Via Nazionale) or Piazza del Collegio Romano, 3 (near Piazza Venezia).

Then go to your embassy.
The Tourist Information Offices of the City Council will be at your disposal to give assistance.

Thefts and losses: Traveller's cheques

Remember you keep your checks and the receipt for them SEPARATE.
Before filing the report as above call the toll free number given by your bank.

  • AMEX: 800.872 000
  • Thomas Cook Mastercard: 800.872 050
  • Visa: 800.874 155

Thefts and losses: Credit cards

If you lose your credit card, block it immediately by calling the international toll free number for your card. The line is operational 24/7 and will be answered by an English speaking operator who will block your card and, if necessary, send you a replacement.

Report the loss of your card to the Italian public security authorities. This is just as important and should be done immediately after blocking it by phone. Make the report to the Carabinieri or the Polizia (see above).

  • AMEX: 800.073973
  • Diner's Club: 800.864064
  • Mastercard: 800.870866
  • Visa: 800.877232

Then file a police report as above.

Don't Panic!

If you arrive at the airport and you baggage has not been sent to the baggage reclaim, you should go to the lost and found office of the airport. At Leonardo da Vinci airport in Fiumicino, as well as G.B. Pastine in Ciampino, this office is near the arrival lounge at the baggage reclaim.

The Air Company you have traveled with, will take care of collecting your luggage or paying you back in case they went lost. For this reason there is a lost and found office by each Air Company carrying out flights to and from Rome.

In the most cases the baggage is received back the same day. The suitcases can be sent to your address. In case of theft or damage the Air Company will pay you back (basic price: 20 dollars a kilo for international flights; 430,000 lire a kilo for national flights).

In case of loss inside the Railway Station of Rome you can contact the lost and found office there (oggetti smarriti).

TIP: Watch out for pickpockets, including children, in busy tourist areas and while using public transport. Never carry cash in your pockets and try and secure backpacks in some fashion.  Be very careful of people asking for money in a crowded street with pieces of paper or newspapers in front of them.  It's not as bad as it sounds but it is better to be safe than sorry.
