Rome's metro system is very useful and quite safe as long as you are alert. Although the bus network is extensive and buses run frequently (though still crowded), the metro is much simpler to master.

The metro system has only two lines, A and B, which cross at Termini. Trains Run approximately every 10 minutes. There are trains from 5.30am until 11.30pm every day (Sat.12.30am).

The metro stations on line A do not have handicapped facilities (except Cipro-Musei Vaticani and Valle Aurelia); alternatively, bus (bus 590 does the same route as the metro line and has wheelchair access. (See "useful bus lines below"). All the metro stations on line B have handicapped facilities except Circo Massimo, Colosseo and Cavour (at the entrance for direction Laurentina).

Metro A offers the possibility to organise itineraries particularly interesting both for shopping and monuments. Here is a list of stops which show possible itineraries of Metro A:

bulletCipro, for instance, the privileged way to the Vatican Museums
bulletOttaviano directed to S. Peter's.
bulletLepanto to Via Cola di Rienzo, a shopping area right for every pocket
bulletFlaminio, both for a walk in Villa Borghese and the Pincio Terrace and a downtown shopping along Via del Corso (Tip: young and trendy shopping), Via del Babuino (Tip: expensive and exclusive shopping), Piazza del Popolo and S.Maria dei Miracoli.
bulletSpagna, to Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) and Trinitą dei Monti (Church of the Holy Trinity) facing Via dei Condotti (Tip: more expensive and exclusive shopping). Not far from there is the Fontana di Trevi (the Trevi Fountain).
bulletVia Veneto and the Fontana di Trevi are near the Barberini stop and the Terme di Diocleziano (Diocletian Baths) is near the Repubblica stop.
bulletVittorio Emanuele will bring you to the Basilica of S.Maria Maggiore
bulletS.Giovanni to the Basilica of S.Giovanni (St. John) and the Scala Santa (the Holy Steps)
bulletCinecittą brings you to the film Studios.

Metro B stops relevant for tourists, instead, are the follows:

bulletS.Paolo, to the Basilica di S.Paolo (St. Paul's outside the Walls)
bulletPiramide, to the Pyramid of Caius Cestius
bulletCirco Massimo and Colosseum, to the Coliseum and the Roman Forum (Tip: where the Miracle Players perform each summer)
bulletCavour, to visit S.Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter's in Chains).

TIP: Watch out for pickpockets on crowded trains, never carry cash in pockets and if possible try and keep your backpacks in front of you.
